President Joe Biden told Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, that he expected “significant de-escalation today” of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza. So far there is little sign of that. Israel fired shells into Lebanon after a rocket attack from the country. Mr Netanyahu said Israeli forces were resolved to carry on until calm was restored. Meanwhile progressive Democratic House members offered a resolution seeking to block $735m in weapons sales to Israel.

The crackdown has come as the country conducts a trial of its own digital yuan. Bitcoin lost almost a third of its value, before recovering half that loss. Other cryptocurrencies also dropped in value as more than $8.6bn of positions were sold off.

America has long objected to Nord Stream 2, arguing that it makes Europe more reliant on Russia for energy. It also bypasses Poland and Ukraine, both American allies. Germany’s foreign minister, Heiko Maas, welcomed the “constructive step”.

A wave of Republican-led states have brought forward legislation this year to curtail terminations. On Monday America’s Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, agreed to hear a case that could undermine abortion rights.

The chief executive of Colonial Pipeline, a big American fuel distributor, said he paid hackers a ransom of $4.4m after they breached the company’s computer network. Meanwhile the Financial Times reported that medical data about patients in Ireland are being shared online, after a cyber-attack on the country’s health service last week. Those responsible want almost $20m in ransom money.

미국 최대 송유관 기업인 Colonial Pipeline은 자사 네트워크가 해킹당한 이후 해커에게 4백만 달러의 몸값을 지불했다고 발표했다. 한편 아일랜드에서는 환자의 의료정보가 유출되었고 해커는 이 정보에 대한 협박금으로 2천만 달러를 요구하고 있다.

The European Union agreed to allow people who have been fully vaccinated with covid-19 jabs approved by the World Health Organisation or by the bloc’s own medical regulator to enter its borders. Visitors from an approved list of countries with low infection rates will also be permitted. But member states will be allowed to make the rules more restrictive if they see fit.

Britain’s post-Brexit emissions-trading system began to operate. Prices hit £50 ($71) a tonne, outstripping record highs seen in the European Union’s carbon market this week. Such schemes put a cost on each unit of carbon dioxide produced by companies. The high price puts disproportionate pressure on heavy polluters, such as steel mills. The government may intervene to lower prices.

브렉시트 이후 영국의 배출권 거래가 시작됐다. 가격은 이번 주 EU 배출권 최고 가격보다 높은 톤당 71달러를 기록했다. 배출권은 기업이 배출하는 이산화탄소 단위에 가격을 부과하는 제도다. 이 제도는 철강 등 배출량이 많은 기업에 부담을 지우며 가격 인하를 위해 정부가 개입할 수 있다.
