Israel’s cabinet reportedly agreed to a ceasefire with Palestinian militant groups in Gaza. It was said to be set to take effect during the night, locally. The truce had been proposed by Egypt, acting as an intermediary. Fighting began after Palestinian protestors clashed with Israeli police near the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam. At least 230 people in Gaza and 13 in Israel have since been killed.

Officials in Inner Mongolia, a Chinese province, established a hotline for residents to report anyone they suspect of mining cryptocurrencies. The move is part of a broader crackdown in China, where the government yesterday warned financial institutions not to accept cryptocurrencies (the country is currently trialling its own digital yuan). Mining—which requires computers to solve mathematical problems—consumes vast amounts of energy.

America’s House of Representatives voted by 213 to 212 for a plan worth $1.9bn to boost security at the Capitol. Yesterday the house backed plans for a commission to investigate the Capitol riots of January 6th. Both bills—favoured by Democrats but shunned by most Republicans—have little chance of passing the Senate, where the two parties have an equal number of seats.

Mr Ghosn was seeking €15m in compensation for wrongful dismissal. He was fired by Nissan after Japanese authorities accused him of financial misconduct in 2018. He denied the claims and, while on bail, fled Japan for Lebanon, reportedly hidden in a musical-instrument case.

China branded the passage of an American warship through waters it claims in the South China Sea as “illegal”. The ship sailed through international waters near the Paracel Islands, an archipelago claimed by China, Taiwan and Vietnam. China’s expansive claims over the South China Sea—which are not supported by international maritime law—have become a source of growing tension with America.

Alexei Navalny has “more or less” recovered from his hunger strike, according to the head of Russia’s prison service. Mr Navalny—an opposition leader and critic of the Kremlin—did not eat for nearly a month to protest against being denied medical treatment. He is currently imprisoned on charges which he says are politically motivated. Mr Navalny’s foundation confirmed that his health was improving.
