Belarus was furiously condemned by European leaders after it appeared to use a bomb scare to force a plane flying over its territory to land in Minsk, so it could arrest a Belarusian journalist on board. The aircraft, operated by Ryanair, was flying from Athens to Vilnius in neighbouring Lithuania. Roman Pratasevich was detained after the plane’s forced diversion to the capital of Belarus. He is a critic of Alexander Lukashenko, who declared himself president last year after he stole an election and violently repressed opposition protests. Poland’s prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, called it “an unprecedented act of state terrorism”.

Residents of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, breathed a sigh of relief after lava flows from yesterday’s eruption of Mount Nyiragongo stopped on the edge of the city. Thousands of inhabitants fled—some heading east across the border to Rwanda, others seeking higher ground to the west. Some homes were damaged though nobody was reported killed. The volcano last erupted in 2002, killing 250 people and making 120,000 homeless.

The country suffered a severe recession in 2020 owing to covid-19 but is now bouncing back. Manufacturing production increased for the first time in a year; oil output also grew.

The government has refused to pay a demand for $20m in bitcoin after the country’s health service suffered a ransomware attack last week. Colonial Pipeline, an American fuel-distribution system that suffered a similar computer breach earlier this month, paid hackers $4.4m so it could resume operations.
