Angela Merkel called for flights over Belarus to be suspended. Germany’s chancellor will meet with other EU leaders for a European Council meeting where they will discuss their response to Belarus’s use of a bomb threat—and a fighter jet—to force a Lithuania-bound plane to land. It then arrested Roman Protasevich, a journalist and longstanding critic of Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus since 1994, who stole re-election last year and has since violently repressed protests. Mrs Merkel called Belarus’s reasons for grounding a commercial airliner “completely implausible”.

Half a million people have been evacuated from the path of Cyclone Yaas, which is expected to make landfall in eastern India on Wednesday. India is facing a relentless battering. Not only did Cyclone Tauktae hit western India last week, killing at least 155, but the country announced that covid-19 deaths had surpassed 300,000 yesterday (doubtless an undercount).

Last year America experienced a record number of storms. Financial losses due to extreme weather were unprecedented, at nearly $100bn. The administration, keen to fight climate change, also launched a new NASA initiative to collect better climate data.

More than 200 people were injured after two light-rail trains collided in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, on Monday evening. There were no immediate reports of fatalities, though dozens of people suffering serious injuries were taken to hospital. Police believe that a miscommunication at an operations centre caused the incident. An investigation is under way.

Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, said that cryptocurrencies and similar assets were dangerous. Cryptocurrencies have recently experienced violent price swings. But financial institutions are increasingly interested in them (see main stories). As digital currencies proliferate, Lael Brainard, a Federal Reserve governor, said that America’s central bank was stepping up its plans to explore a digital version of the US dollar.

Russia’s internet regulator gave Google 24 hours to delete what it deems “prohibited content”, including information about drugs and groups it considers extremist (a classification the government is currently trying to extend to organisations associated with Alexei Navalny, an opposition leader). If Google does not comply it could be fined or face throttled speeds within Russia.
