During talks with Shelley Moore Capito, the Republicans’ top negotiator on infrastructure, President Joe Biden offered to scrap a proposed increase in America’s main corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% in exchange for $1trn in extra infrastructure spending. Mr Biden would instead increase the country’s minimum corporate-tax rate from 10.5% to 15% to pay for his ambitious infrastructure bill.

미 바이든 대통령은 공화당과의 협상에서 1조 달러의 추가 인프라 예산을 확보하기 위해 법인세를 21%에서 28%로 인상하는 안을 철회하겠다고 제안했다. 대신 최저 법인세를 10.%에서 15%로 인상하겠다고 했다.

A United Nations index of global food prices rose for the 12th consecutive month, its longest stretch in more than a decade. Since the pandemic began, a drought in Brazil has hit coffee and maize production. Output of vegetable oil in South-East Asia has also stagnated. Meanwhile, soaring meat consumption as China’s economy rapidly recovers has increased its demand for grain imports.

America’s services sector grew at its fastest ever pace in May, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s purchasing-managers’ index. Its measure of services activity reached 64, higher than the previous record of 63.7 in March, where any reading over 50 indicates growth. Nonetheless, an ISM index released at the same time measuring employment growth in the sector showed signs of deceleration.

Russia’s finance minister said that the country’s National Wealth Fund, which holds money generated by sales of oil and gas, will eliminate its dollar holdings in favour of euros, yuan and gold. Though Russia has been moving away from the dollar for some time, recent sanctions, including those levied by America in response to cyber-crime attacks, have diminished its appeal as a reserve currency.

The Joint List, an alliance of majority-Arab parties, threw its weight behind a move to depose the Israeli parliament’s current speaker so he cannot delay a vote that would put a new government in power. Eight parties have agreed to form a coalition that would unseat Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest serving prime minister, but the Knesset must first approve it.

In a sign that previously frosty relations between China’s government and Ant Group are thawing, regulators gave the fintech giant approval to operate a consumer-finance company. Ant’s IPO, scheduled for November 2020, was cancelled after a regulatory crackdown on fintech firms. Ant will own half of the new entity, contributing 4bn Chinese yuan ($626m) in capital. The other 50% will be split between six shareholders.

David Diop, a French-Senegalese writer, won the International Booker Prize for his novel “At Night All Blood is Black”. Half of the £50,000 ($71,000) prize goes to Anna Moschovakis, an American author who translated the work from French. The most realist of the novels shortlisted, it follows a Senegalese soldier’s descent into madness while fighting for France in the first world war.

소설 “At Night All Blood is Black”을 쓴 David Diop가 올해 국제맨부커상을 수상했다. 7만여 달러의 상금 절반은 책을 번역한 Anna Moschovakis와 나눈다. 이 소설은 후보작 중 가장 사실에 가까운 것으로 세네갈 후손인 군인이 제1차세계대전에서 프랑스측에서 싸우면서 정신을 잃어가는 이야기이다.
