Finance ministers from the G7 club of big economies threw their weight behind a minimum global tax rate of at least 15% for the largest companies. The deal is an attempt to raise more from multinationals, in particular big tech. Countries including America, Britain, France and Germany finalised the details at a meeting in London. The broader G20 could sign up as soon as July, spurring 120 or so other countries and territories to fall into line.

Peru prepared to hold a run-off presidential election on Sunday, in which a populist, left-leaning teacher will face the right-leaning daughter of an imprisoned ex-president. The contest between Pedro Castillo, of the Free Peru party, who led after the first round of voting in April, and his opponent, Keiko Fujimori, is extremely close. She was the runner-up in two previous presidential contests. The election takes place as Peruvians suffer from an exceptionally high rate of covid-19 deaths.

Many Nigerians lost access to Twitter on mobile-phone networks, hours after the government announced (using one of its own Twitter accounts) that it had banned the social network “indefinitely”. Last week Twitter deleted a post by President Muhammadu Buhari that referred to the country’s civil war in the late 1960s and threatened people “misbehaving today”. The company said his post violated its policy on abusive behaviour.

A federal judge ruled that California’s ban on assault weapons, in place since 1989, violates the second amendment. He described guns such as the AR-15 rifle, which are legal in other states and have been used in several mass shootings, as “like the Swiss Army Knife”. The ruling will be stayed for 30 days, during which California’s attorney-general has promised to appeal against it.

Hong Kongers did their best to mark the anniversary of the massacre around Tiananmen Square in 1989, despite the government again banning an annual vigil in Victoria Park. Hundreds of people, clad in black and with mobile-phones illuminated, skirted the park, where riot police had been stationed. Hong Kong had been the only place on Chinese soil where mass-remembrance of the events in Beijing 32 years ago took place.

America created nearly 560,000 new jobs in May—slightly fewer than some economists had predicted but a significant improvement on the 278,000 jobs added in April. Unemployment fell below 6% for the first time since the start of the pandemic, to 5.8%. The figures suggest that America’s economic rebound and generous fiscal stimulus have not created a labour shortage.

Brazil’s health regulator approved Sputnik V, the Russian covid-19 vaccine, but stipulated that it may be used only in healthy adults. It also approved Covaxin, an Indian jab. The regulator had initially rejected the Sputnik vaccine in April, citing concerns over its safety and efficacy. Meanwhile, China approved its Sinovac jab for emergency use in children as young as three.
