India recorded 114,460 covid-19 cases, the lowest figure in two months. America said it would donate 750,000 doses of covid-19 vaccines to Taiwan. The island is grappling with a spike in covid-19 infections and only 3.2% of people aged over 12 have had their first jab. Taiwan has accused China of blocking its access to vaccines; on Friday China’s foreign ministry criticised Japan for its donation of 1.2m doses.

Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union saw off a challenge from the far-right Alternative for Germany in Saxony-Anhalt’s state election. The chancellor’s party won 35.9% of the vote, compared with the AfD’s 22.7%, according to a projected result published on Sunday. The result means that the CDU can continue to govern in Saxony-Anhalt, without forming a far-left coalition.

Joe Manchin, a Democrat Senator, said that he would oppose a voting-rights bill that would expand access to voting across the country. Mr Manchin said that the bill, backed by most of his fellow Democrats, would “divide” America. He said he would instead support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which offers more moderate protections.

Opposition parties in Somaliland claimed victory in the country’s first parliamentary election since 2005. The Somaliland National Party, known as WADDANI, and the Justice and Welfare Party together won 52 seats, compared with the ruling party’s 30. Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 and has been mostly peaceful since, while Somalia has been beset by civil war.

Volkswagen reached a settlement with its former boss, Martin Winterkorn, over his role in the “dieselgate” scandal. In 2015 the car company was discovered to have cheated in diesel-engine tests. The crisis cost the company more than €32bn ($38.9bn). No details of the settlement were released, but it has been reported that Mr Winterkorn will pay about €10m. The deal requires shareholder approval.
