America’s medicines regulator approved a drug to slow the progress of Alzheimer’s (see main stories). Aducanumab, which is owned by Biogen, a biotechnology company, is the first new treatment for the disease in nearly two decades. It has been a bumpy road: two trials were ended in 2019 because they expected poor results. Biogen later said a higher dose over a longer period seemed effective.

미국 보건 당국이 알츠하이머 진행을 늦추는 의약품을 승인했다. 이번에 승인 받은 바이오 기업 Biogen의 신약 Aducanumab는 20년 만에 처음으로 발표되는 알츠하이머 의약품이다. 알츠하이머 의약품 개발은 어려운 상황이었다. 2019년에는 임상 실험 결과가 좋지 않아 중단되었다. Biogen은 의약품 사용량과 기간을 늘리면 효능이 높아진다고 발표했다.

The result of Peru’s presidential election remained too close to call. Keiko Fujimori, the right-wing candidate, has a narrow lead over Pedro Castillo, a left-wing candidate and political newcomer. But Mr Castillo is gaining ground as results are declared in rural areas, where he has more support. The vote is expected to go to the wire.

But the left-wing populist’s majority looks set to fall, reflecting discontent with his economic policies and his approach to serious crime. Campaigning in Mexico’s biggest-ever election was marred by violence. At least 89 politicians have been killed in the past 200 days.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of e-commerce giant Amazon, and his brother will be among the first civilians to fly to space. The pair will board the first space-tourism flight of Blue Origin, Mr Bezos’s space company, which will launch later this month. If all goes to plan, he will beat two other billionaires with their own rival ventures, Elon Musk and Richard Branson, into space.

Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, withdrew his country from the Open Skies treaty. The international agreement allows states to carry out unarmed surveillance flights over fellow members’ territory. America withdrew from the pact last year, during Donald Trump’s presidency. Last month Biden’s administration said it would not rejoin.

러시아 푸틴 대통령이 항공자유화조약을 탈퇴했다. 항공자유화조약 가입국은 다른 가입국 영공에서 비무장 정찰 비행을 할 수 있다. 미국 전 트럼프 대통령은 작년에 이 조약을 탈퇴했으며 현 바이든 대통령도 재가입 의사가 없다고 밝혔다.

Google agreed to pay French regulators a fine of €220m ($268m) to settle an antitrust case against it. France’s competition authority had accused the American tech giant of unfairly directing traffic towards its own advertisers and its own online auction house in a way that harmed its rivals. French antitrust cases against Apple and Facebook are still pending.

구글은 반독점 소송과 관련해 2억여 달러의 벌금을 프랑스 정부에 지급하기로 합의했다. 프랑스 당국은 구글이 자사 광고주와 옥션 하우스에 유리하게 트래픽을 조정해 타 경쟁사에 피해를 입혔다고 주장했다. 애플과 페이스북에 대한 소송도 진행 중이다.

Colonel Assimi Goita, the head of the military junta that seized control of Mali two weeks ago, was sworn in as interim president. The coup was Mali’s second in nine months. Now the armed forces have deposed their own transitional leaders. Mr Goita has promised elections, which are expected next February.

약 2주 전 말리 정권을 빼앗은 Goita 군부 세력이 임시 대통령으로 취임했다. 이번 쿠데타는 9개월 만에 두 번째이다. 신군부 세력은 자체 임시 정부단을 축출한 셈이다. Goita 군 정권은 2월에 선거를 치르겠다고 약속했다.
