America’s Department of Justice recovered most of the ransom that Colonial Pipeline paid to hackers last month. The firm handed over 75 bitcoins (then worth more than $4m) to DarkSide after the cyber-criminal group crippled its fuel network, causing havoc along America’s east coast. The DoJ traced and then seized 63.7 bitcoins, worth around $2.3m, following a drop in the cryptocurrency’s value.

Some of the world’s most-visited websites crashed because of an outage at Fastly, a cloud-computing platform used to help web pages load faster. Amazon, eBay, Paypal, Twitter and numerous news sites were among those affected by the failure in a content-delivery network run by Fastly. Sites were offline for about an hour before the company fixed the problem.

President Joe Biden’s administration announced that America will set up a new “supply-chain trade strike force” to tackle supply shortages and unfair trade practices. The body, presumably aimed primarily at China, will look for trade violations that may have harmed America’s manufacturing capacity. Mr Biden has already pledged to invest in American manufacturing and to lessen dependence on China.

Google said alternative search engines will be listed for free as default web-browser options on its Android devices in the European Union. The tech giant was fined €4.2bn ($5.2bn) by the bloc in 2018 for unfairly promoting its own search engine. In 2019 it agreed to list other browsers, but said rivals would have to pay a fee.

Carrie Lam, the chief executive of Hong Kong, said the city will continue to invite foreign judges to sit on its courts. Last week Brenda Hale, a former British judge, said she would retire from Hong Kong’s highest court next month. International concern about the city’s legal system has grown since the introduction of a draconian national-security law last year.

Eighteen countries were involved in the sting; at least 250 synchronised arrests were made. Australian police reckon they disrupted 21 murder plots.

A court in Ghana refused to grant bail to 21 gay-rights activists. They were arrested almost three weeks ago: police accused them of possessing books and leaflets with information on LGBT issues. Promoting gay rights is not illegal in Ghana but gay sex is punishable by up to three years imprisonment. LGBT people have reported increased persecution in recent months.
