President Joe Biden flew to Europe on his first foreign tour as president, where his initial stop will be St Ives, a twee British seaside town, for a G7 summit at the weekend. Next comes Brussels, where Mr Biden will meet the leaders of the European Union and NATO. Last on the itinerary is a meeting in Geneva with Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin.

미 바이든 대통령은 G7 정상회담을 위해 영국 세인트아이브스로 출발했다. 영국 이후 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 EU, NATO 정상과 회동한다. 마지막으로 스위스 제네바에서 러시아 푸틴 대통령과 만난다.

Talks on a trade dispute between Britain and the EU—dubbed the “sausage war”—ended without resolution, meaning that exports of chilled meats from the British mainland to Northern Ireland will be banned from the end of the month. Britain said it will continue to move goods across the Irish Sea regardless. The EU threatened to impose tariffs if it did.

Even so, the Biden administration remains concerned about the security risk posed by China. It issued a new order to increase scrutiny of foreign-designed apps and could make any future bans binding.

El Salvador became the first country in the world to make bitcoin legal tender. Starting in three months, every business must accept payment in the cryptocurrency unless it lacks the technological ability. Nayib Bukele, El Salvador’s president, said it would make it easier for Salvadorans to send remittances, which make up one-fifth of the country’s GDP.

Despite the incident, the IT firm’s shares rose 11% —perhaps because investors realised the company’s size and importance for the first time, or were impressed by its swift response.

Nicaraguan authorities arrested two opposition candidates who were due to challenge Daniel Ortega, the president, in November’s elections. Felix Maradiaga and Juan Sebastián Chamorro were both accused of terrorism and of undermining Nicaragua’s independence. Two other opposition candidates were arrested last week. Mr Ortega, who first came to power in 1979, is seeking a fourth term.

Republicans had wanted to limit the proposed spending and fund it through user charges rather than tax rises. The president reached out to a bipartisan group that has been working on an alternative proposal.
