Trade representatives from America and the EU ended a 17-year dispute over subsidies offered to Boeing and Airbus respectively. Each side had griped repeatedly to the World Trade Organisation that the other unfairly favoured their own aerospace titan. They agreed to a five-year moratorium on punitive tariffs imposed on the other’s planemakers, and to release statements making it clear what each considers “acceptable support” for their respective companies. The rapprochement is widely seen as part of a tightening of transatlantic links to combat China’s growing economic might.

The EU’s top court ruled that “under certain conditions” watchdogs in any member state could take Facebook to court for allegedly violating the bloc’s privacy regulations. Hitherto cross-border complaints have been handled by a single country’s data-privacy authority—in Facebook’s case Ireland, where it is domiciled. Given the narrowness of the ruling, its implications for tech companies are uncertain.

The EU barred some of the world’s largest banks—including Bank of America, Barclays, Citi and JPMorgan—from getting involved in the sale of its NextGenerationEU bonds, according to the Financial Times. Ten banks were excluded over historic breaches of antitrust rules. The EU’s ten-year bonds went on sale on June 14th to part-finance the bloc’s €800bn ($970bn) pandemic-recovery fund.

Taiwanese officials reported that China flew 28 military planes into a buffer zone around the island. It is the largest in a series of Chinese incursions into Taiwanese airspace and comes shortly after leaders of the G7, a group of rich countries, stressed the importance of “peace and stability” across the Taiwan Strait.

A French court ordered IKEA France to pay a fine of €1m ($1.2m) for spying on its staff. The French subsidiary of the Swedish furniture chain used private detectives and illegally obtained police records to collect personal data, which it used to vet job applicants and monitor staff between 2009 and 2012. Two former executives were fined and given suspended prison sentences. IKEA apologised for the practices.

PricewaterhouseCoopers plans to add 100,000 new employees to its global workforce over the next five years. The consultancy’s overall headcount will grow by one third, adding to an already rapid expansion over the past five years. It plans to invest heavily in developing its business in Asia, as well as strengthen its expertise in corporate social responsibility.

회계컨설팅 기업 PricewaterhouseCoopers이 향후 5년 동안 전세계적으로 직원 10만 명 더 채용하겠다고 발표했다. 지난 5년 동안 꾸준히 고용 규모를 확대해온 것에 이어 1/3를 더 확대하겠다는 계획이다. 특히 아시아 사업 개발에 크게 투자할 것이며, 기업의 사회적 책임(CSR)도 강화하겠다고 밝혔다.

Britain and Australia agreed a trade deal—the first that Britain has negotiated from scratch since it left the European Union in 2020. (Other deals have been based on terms previously agreed under EU membership.) It could pave the way for Britain’s signing up to the CPTPP trade agreement, which currently comprises eleven Pacific Rim countries, including Australia.
