America’s Supreme Court threw out California v Texas, a far-fetched lawsuit attempting to strike down the Affordable Care Act, an Obama-era health-care law. Separately, in a religious liberty case called Fulton v City of Philadelphia, the justices ruled that the city could not exclude a Catholic organisation from its foster-care programme for refusing to place children with gay couples. Though both were decided comfortably—by 7-2 and 9-0 respectively—neither resolved the underlying dispute. The court ruled that the plaintiffs in the first case lacked legal standing to sue, while Fulton v City of Philadelphia was decided on narrow, factual grounds specific to the case.

Covid-19 cases in Afghanistan are spiralling out of control, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, a humanitarian organisation. Infection rates increased by about 2,400% in the past month. Last week 34% of the country’s covid-19 tests came back positive. Many more cases are certainly going undiagnosed. Hospitals lack sufficient beds and oxygen supplies.

JPMorgan Chase, a large American retail bank, agreed to buy Nutmeg, a British online investment-management service, for an undisclosed amount. Nutmeg, which was launched in 2012, has 140,000 investors and £3.5bn ($4.9bn) in assets under management. The acquisition strengthens JPMorgan Chase’s position in the fintech sector. It is set to launch as a digital bank in Britain later this year.

Jimmy Lai, the tycoon who founded the tabloid, is already in jail facing other charges.

Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, signed a bill permitting people to carry handguns in public without a licence in the state, provided they are over 21 and not otherwise disqualified from owning a firearm. Such permitless carry bills, virtually unheard of twenty years ago, have been popular recently—since February six states have passed new or expanded legislation of this sort.

China launched three astronauts into orbit to man its new space station. The Shenzhou-12 docked at Tianhe today. The crew’s commander said that China’s space programme had “crystallised the Chinese people’s thousand-year dream of flying to the sky” and added a “heroic chapter” to the history of the Chinese Communist Party, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 1st.
