The delta variant is on its way to becoming the globally dominant strain of the coronavirus causing covid-19, the World Health Organisation’s chief scientist said. The highly infectious variant, which first emerged in India, has been behind a rise in cases in places from Britain, which recently postponed lockdown-loosenings, to Moscow, which just imposed new restrictions. The variant is also spreading in America.

코로나 바이러스 델타 변이가 전 세계적으로 확산되고 있다고 WHO 당국이 발표했다. 인도에서처음 발견된 이 변종은 감염성이 한층 높아졌으며, 최근 규제를 완화한 영국에서부터 신규 규제를 가한 러시아까지 확산세에 있다. 미국에서도 변종 바이러스가 퍼지고 있다.

A Belgian court ordered AstraZeneca to deliver 80.2m covid-19 vaccine doses to the European Union by September 27th—a ruling both sides claimed as a victory. AstraZeneca originally committed to supply 300m doses by July, but lowered that to 100m after production holdups, angering the EU. The company expects to deliver over 80m doses by the end of June.

EU 집행위원회 법원이 아스트라제네카에게 9월 27일까지 코로나 백신 8천만 회분을 EU에 공급하라고 판결했다. 이에 대해 아스트라제네카와 EU 양측 모두 승소한 것이라고 주장했다. 아스트라제네카는 7월까지 3억 회분을 공급할 것을 약속했으나 1억 회분으로 공급량을 줄어 EU가 불만족을 표했다. 아스트라제네카가 6월 말까지 8천만 회분을 공급할 것으로 예상된다.

Eight of the ten banks barred from joining in on the sale of EU bonds this week will be allowed to participate in future rounds. The bloc plans to issue up to €800bn in debt over the next five years to fund member states’ covid-19 recovery. The ten banks were banned for previous breaches of antitrust rules.

With barely a month left before the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japanese medical experts published a report saying that not allowing spectators would be the “least risky” option. Foreign visitors are barred, but the government remains keen that Japanese fans attend. The International Olympic Committee and the governments of Japan and Tokyo will meet to decide the matter on Monday.

Palestinian protesters threw rocks at police officers, who replied with stun grenades and rubber bullets, during demonstrations in Jerusalem. The protest followed a rally of Jewish nationalists on Tuesday where chants of “death to Arabs” were heard. Israel launched air strikes against Gaza in response to incendiary balloons floated towards Israel by Palestinian militants. 팔레스타인 시위대가 경찰을 향해 돌을 던졌으며, 이에 대해 경찰은 최루탄과 고무탄으로 대응했다. 팔레스타인 시위가 있기 전인 지난 화요일, 이스라엘 민족주의자들이 “아랍에 죽음을”이라고 외치며 시위를 벌였다. 이스라엘은 폭탄풍선을 띄워 보낸 팔레스타인 무장단체를 향해 공급을 개시했다.

The European Union said its members should allow American tourists to visit this summer. The recommendation is not binding; each of the 27 member-states will decide individually. Greece, France and Spain, all countries reliant on tourism, had already loosened restrictions. Europeans expecting reciprocity will be disappointed. An American travel ban means that, for now, stateside holidays are off.

Alieu Kosiah, a Liberian former rebel commander nicknamed “bluff boy”, was found guilty of war crimes by a Swiss court. The conviction was a first twice over—both the first war-crimes charges heard by a Swiss civilian court and the first war-crimes conviction relating to Liberia’s two civil wars (though Charles Taylor, Liberia’s former president, was convicted of crimes committed in neighbouring Sierra Leone).
