Ethiopia’s government declared a ceasefire in the northern region of Tigray, temporarily pausing a civil war that has killed thousands, displaced millions and driven 350,000 to the brink of starvation. The announcement came shortly after Tigray’s interim administration, appointed by the federal government, fled Mekelle, the region’s capital. The government’s adversary in the war, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front, claims to have recaptured the city, and has not commented on the government’s announcement.

Mixing different covid-19 vaccines could boost immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19, according to a study to be published in the Lancet. Researchers found that inoculating participants with a shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine four weeks after jabbing them with Oxford-AstraZeneca’s, and vice versa, produced a high level of antibodies. Both combinations triggered a stronger immune response than a repeat of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s.

The European Commission approved a deal allowing personal data to flow freely between the European Union and Britain for four years. Personal information leaving the bloc will have the same level of protection as it would within Europe under EU legislation. The decision will save businesses in Britain an estimated £1.6bn ($2.2bn), according to the New Economics Foundation, a think-tank.

Miguel Cardona, America’s education secretary, started a three-day trip to Puerto Rico by announcing that the territory would receive nearly $4bn in pandemic relief to help its education system. Schools have been open only intermittently, while online learning is an impossibility for many because of the island’s patchy power and internet infrastructure.

Juul agreed to pay North Carolina $40m to settle a lawsuit in which the state accused the e-cigarette company of unlawfully marketing and distributing its products to young people, fuelling a “vaping epidemic”. The settlement imposed a number of restrictions, including not targeting minors or claiming that e-cigarettes are safer than cigarettes. Attorneys-general in 13 other states have sued Juul.

Two men were charged with murdering the daughter and driver of Katumba Wamala, a Ugandan minister, and with Mr Wamala’s attempted murder. On June 1st four people on motorcycles opened fire on a car transporting the minister through the suburbs of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. There have been a number of politically motivated assassinations in Uganda in recent years. Most remain unsolved.

The world’s second-biggest hydropower station went into operation in south-west China, even though it is still under construction. The Baihetan Hydropower Station, which sits across a tributary of the Yangtze River, will ultimately have 16 turbines producing 62.4 terawatt-hours of electricity each year. Two turbines were turned on yesterday.
