Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court after failing to appear at an inquiry relating to allegations of corruption during his time in power. Separately, Mr Zuma last month pled not guilty to corruption charges relating to an arms deal struck in 1999.

The Conference Board’s index of American consumer confidence rose for the fifth month running, from 120 in May to 127.3 in June. The research group reckons that Americans expect business conditions and their own financial situation will continue to improve. The confidence index is at its highest since the pandemic began, though still below the 132.6 registered in February 2020.

Lebanon’s energy minister increased the price of petrol and other fuel by 35% in an attempt to dampen demand. Queues at petrol stations have become a regular sight in recent weeks, as have protests over the dearth of fuel. Lebanon’s economy remains in a dire state, and political deadlock has prevented the formation of a government that might try to tackle the crisis.

A night-time curfew has been imposed.

The arrival of Brazil’s dry season means clearance for farming is likely to intensify. Deforestation has surged during Mr Bolsonaro’s presidency. Activists fear that the bolstered policing efforts are a “smokescreen” to boost his green credentials.
