FINRA, an independent American financial regulator, handed down penalties totalling $70m—its largest ever—to Robinhood, a retail share-trading app. It said the app caused “widespread and significant” harm to users by feeding them misleading information and failing to maintain an acceptable service during periods of high market volatility. Robinhood said it would address FINRA’s concerns.

The European Union extended the grace period on exports of chilled meat from the British mainland to Northern Ireland until the end of September—temporarily diffusing a trade dispute dubbed the “sausage war”. Under the Brexit agreement, Northern Ireland is still bound by EU food standards, meaning some exports across the Irish Sea are in effect banned. The British government wants to renegotiate.

Two former Serbian officials were convicted by a United Nations court for their involvement in crimes committed by Serb paramilitaries in 1992. Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic were sentenced to 12 years in prison for aiding and abetting murder, deportation and persecution in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The verdicts are the final UN prosecution for crimes committed during the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Bill Cosby was freed from prison shortly after Pennsylvania’s highest court overturned his conviction in 2018 for sexual assault. The comedian has served two years of a three-to ten-year sentence. The court said he should not have faced charges after striking a non-prosecution deal more than 15 years ago. Mr Cosby’s was the first prominent sexual-assault trial of the #MeToo era.

On Tuesday the government suspended a seperate contract worth 1.6bn reais ($321m) with Bharat Biotech, an Indian firm, amid allegations of irregularities. Both Bharat and the government deny wrongdoing. More than 500,000 Brazilians have died of coronavirus.

The Ethiopian government said its armed forces could return to Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, within weeks—undermining the ceasefire it unilaterally declared this week. On Monday the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the erstwhile leaders of the province, forced government troops into retreat. Eight months of fighting in Tigray have left thousands dead, millions displaced, and 350,000 people close to starvation.

The reforms were passed after months of wrangling in the state’s legislature, and less than a week after the sentencing of Derek Chauvin, a former police officer, for the murder last year of George Floyd, an unarmed black man.
