America’s Supreme Court ruled that Arizona’s voting restrictions do not violate the Voting Rights Act, a key piece of civil-rights legislation—suggesting that it might be unwilling to strike down similarly restrictive voting bills being pushed by Republican-led states. Arizona forces election officials to discard ballots cast in the wrong precinct and bans most people from collecting filled-in ballots to deliver to polling stations. The 6-3 decision overturns that of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which declared the rules disproportionately disadvantaged ethnic-minority voters.

In a step towards global corporate tax reform, 130 countries and jurisdictions backed a minimum tax rate of 15% for multinational companies, as well as new rules to share the spoils. Several countries that had previously had reservations about the idea have now signed up, including China, India and Turkey. Hungary, Ireland and Nigeria are still among the holdouts.

After a two-year investigation, the Manhattan district attorney’s office charged the Trump Organisation with criminal tax fraud, grand larceny and falsifying business records. The company encompasses hundreds of firms that run hotels and golf courses. Its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, was also charged with financial crimes. He pleaded not guilty. The Trump Organisation said prosecutors were using Mr Weisselberg as “a pawn in a scorched earth attempt to harm the former president.”

How the bill will relate to an agreement struck between President Joe Biden and a bipartisan group of senators last week remains unclear, though Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats’ leader in the House, said they endorsed both.

Hundreds of women in Turkey protested against the country’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, a treaty designed to combat violence against women that was signed in Turkey’s biggest city in 2011. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced in March his plans to exit the treaty, in favour of local laws to protect women’s rights. But activists say that femicide has spiked in recent years.

Britain’s chancellor, Rishi Sunak, said the government will set its own regulations for financial services after failing to strike an “equivalence” arrangement with the EU. The financial sector is largely excluded from Britain’s trade deal with the bloc. The chancellor had hoped a separate agreement would allow British firms wide access to European markets after Brexit. That now looks unlikely.

Health authorities in the Dominican Republic said they would begin administering third doses of covid-19 vaccines, on a voluntary basis, to stave off more infectious variants of the virus. The regional office of the World Health Organisation said there is no scientific evidence that more than two doses are necessary, but the health officials are worried by a new surge in infections.
