China’s internet regulator announced investigations into companies whose parents have listed in America, days after ordering that Didi Chuxing, a ride-hailing firm, be removed from Chinese app stores. Didi’s shares fell as much as 25% on Tuesday. Full Truck Alliance, which operates truck-hailing apps, and Kanzhun, an online recruitment company—both listed in America—were down by 18% and 12% respectively.

Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s president, averted the threat of impeachment for now. Arthur Lira, the speaker of the lower house, said there was nothing to warrant opening an investigation against him and argued that the process would destabilise the economy. Prosecutors are investigating Mr Bolsonaro over alleged irregularities in the government’s procurement of covid-19 vaccines. He denies any wrongdoing.

Oil prices in America hit a six-year high, continuing the rally caused by the failure of OPEC+ members to agree on increasing output. The group of oil-exporting countries and their allies has been deadlocked since Friday. Futures for West Texas Intermediate jumped to $76.95 per barrel, the highest price since 2014, while Brent crude reached $77.77 per barrel.

주요 석유생산국으로 구성된 OPEC+ 가 증산에 합의하지 못하자 미국 유가가 최근 6년 최고치를 기록했다. OPEC+ 국가들 간 합의는 금요일 이후 현재 정체 상태다. WTI유와 브렌트유는 각각 배럴당 76.95 달러, 77.77 달러로 상승했다.

America’s Defence Department said it was pulling the plug on a controversial cloud-computing contract. After the $10bn contract for the Joint Enterprise Defence Infrastructure, known as JEDI, went to Microsoft in 2019, Amazon sued, saying its rival lacked the necessary technical capabilities. The Pentagon has now decided on a different cloud architecture and suggests it may buy technology from both companies to build it.

More people died than were born in Britain in 2020, for the first time since 1976, according to the Office of National Statistics. The covid-19 pandemic meant that more deaths were registered in the country than in any year since the first world war. Births fell to their lowest level since 2003. Nevertheless, the population overall still increased because of inward migration.

Israel’s parliament did not renew a controversial law that bars Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank from obtaining citizenship or residency in Israel through marriage to Israeli citizens. The law was introduced in 2003 during the bloody unrest of the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising. The vote—a tie at 59-59—angered Naftali Bennett, the new prime minister and a vocal ultranationalist, who needs to manage an ideologically diverse coalition.

Nine people, including six secondary-school students, were arrested in Hong Kong over an alleged terrorist plot. The police claimed the group intended to set off homemade bombs in courts, tunnels and on the streets. Carrie Lam, the territory’s leader, said that “ideologies” were a risk to national security; she urged parents and teachers to monitor teenagers more closely.
