Shops were looted and roads closed in Johannesburg, as sporadic acts of violence spread after the jailing of Jacob Zuma, a former president of South Africa. Mr Zuma began a 15-month sentence for contempt of court on Wednesday; his incarceration has angered his supporters. Police said that criminals were exploiting the unrest to steal goods; more than 60 people have been arrested.

The first passenger flight operated by Virgin Galactic, a space-exploration company co-founded by Sir Richard Branson, successfully sent him into space. Sir Richard flew more than 80km into the Earth’s atmosphere from New Mexico. Jeff Bezos, another billionaire, hopes to make a similar flight on July 20th, with his own company, Blue Origin.

Janet Yellen, America’s Treasury secretary, said that a newly endorsed mechanism to allow countries to tax highly profitable multinationals may not be ready for lawmakers to consider until 2022. Ms Yellen said that the re-allocation of taxing rights in rich countries was on a “slightly slower track” than the global corporate tax rate of at least 15%, which is backed by 132 countries.

Taiwan obtained 10m doses of the BioNTech covid-19 vaccine, after a protracted process in which the island accused China of blocking its access to jabs. Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group, a Chinese company, has a contract with BioNTech to sell the vaccines in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, meaning that Taiwan couldn’t buy jabs directly from the German company.

Egypt’s Suez Canal reported record revenues in the year to June, despite the fact that for six days in March the waterway was blocked by the Ever Given, a container ship. The canal earned $5.84bn in the 2020-2021 financial year, up from $5.72bn in the previous year. The wayward ship was released from the canal earlier this month.

Colombia confirmed that 13 suspects in the killing of Jovenel Moïse, Haiti’s president, were members of its military. Two Haitian-Americans claiming to be translators for the hit squad are also among the detained suspects. Some Haitians have called for American military assistance; the Biden administration says it has no plans to send any.

The Taliban seized two strategically important border towns as their advance across Afghanistan continued seemingly unabated. Islam Qala is a crossing point into Iran, and Torghundi borders Turkmenistan. The insurgents now claim to control 85% of the country’s territory, although that cannot be verified. Their surge comes as America is rapidly withdrawing its forces.
