A record 93,000 people died from drug overdoses in America in 2020, a 29% increase from the previous year. As well as worsening some people’s anxiety and depression, lockdowns imposed during the pandemic reduced access to needle exchange programmes, narcotics support groups and other life-saving measures. More deadly drugs, such as fentanyl, also became more common.

The protests were ignited by the jailing of Jacob Zuma, a former president, and then fuelled by anger about inequality.

Senate Democrats introduced a draft bill that would decriminalise marijuana at the federal level. The proposal, backed by Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader, would remove cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances. The drug is already legal in many states across America. Recreational use of marijuana is allowed in 18 states; medical use is legal in 36 states.

Scott Rivkees, the head of Florida’s health department, says that requiring vaccines is discriminatory. Meanwhile, a cruise ship from another line returned to Singapore after a passenger tested positive for covid-19, forcing all other passengers to be confined to their cabins.

Britain’s rate of consumer-price inflation rose to 2.5% in the 12 months to June, up from 2.1% in May, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics. Inflation is predicted to peak at 3% later in the year. The higher than expected figures suggest that businesses are responding to the easing of lockdown restrictions by increasing their prices.

The European Commission unveiled an ambitious plan to cut the bloc’s greenhouse-gas emissions by 55% by 2030, from 1990 levels. “Fit for 55” proposes legislation to raise the cost of emitting carbon in several industries and transition to electric vehicles. It also includes a levy on imported products based on the carbon emitted while making them. Approving the package could take up to two years.
