Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, promised “all the power of the state” to help people affected by severe floods. At least 43 people in Germany and six in Belgium have died; dozens more are injured or still missing. Heavy rain hit Belgium, north-western Germany and the Netherlands over the past few days, causing flash floods that caught both residents and officials by surprise.

독일 메르켈 총리는 “국력을 총동원해” 홍수 재난민을 지원할 것이라고 발표했다. 이번 폭우로 독일에서는 최소 43명, 벨기에에서는 6명이 사망했고 수 십 명이 부상 또는 실종됐다. 예측치 못한 폭우는 벨기에, 독일, 네덜란드를 덮치며 주민과 공무원 모두 놀랐다.

Saad Hariri, prime minister designate of Lebanon, resigned citing disagreements with the president. Following the resignation of his predecessor after the Beirut port explosion last year, Mr Hariri was given the task of forming a new government. It will be almost impossible to do so before parliamentary elections next year. The Lebanese pound hit an all-time low, having already lost 90% of its value since late 2019.

Initial jobless claims in America fell by 26,000 to 360,000 in the week ending July 10th, the lowest level since the covid-19 crisis was declared a pandemic last March. Applications for unemployment benefits have declined in recent months as the economy has bounced back. Many states have wound down extra federal benefits and, in some cases, replaced them with incentives to return to work to try to combat labour shortages.

Facebook said it took down some 200 accounts run by a group of Iranian hackers known as “Tortoiseshell” that tried to target American and European military personnel. The social-media company said the hackers created fake profiles to make contact with their targets and incite them to click links exposing their devices to malware that would enable spying.

The European Court of Justice ruled that companies may ban employees from wearing a hijab under certain conditions, including if the employer needs to present a “neutral image”. The cases were presented by two women in Germany who were suspended from work for their hijabs. It is now up to German courts to rule on whether the suspensions were discriminatory.

유럽재판소는 특정 조건에서는 직원이 히잡을 착용하는 것을 기업이 금지할 수 있다고 판결했다. 예컨대 기업이 “중립적인 이미지”를 보여줘야 하는 경우가 해당된다. 이번 판결은 두 독일 여성이 히잡을 착용한 이유로 직무 정지를 당한 사건이다. 직무 정지가 차별적이었는지에 대해서는 독일 법원이 판결해야 한다.

Tokyo logged 1,308 new covid-19 cases, a six-month daily high, eight days before the Olympic games start. Events will be held without spectators as Tokyo is in a state of emergency, its fourth since the pandemic began. This is the second consecutive day that over 1,000 new cases have been reported in the city. Infections across Japan have been increasing since late June.

The Taliban offered a three-month ceasefire in Afghanistan in exchange for the release of 7,000 prisoners and the removal of the militant group’s leaders from a United Nations blacklist. Conflict between the government’s forces and the Taliban increased after a similar release of 5,000 prisoners last year, according to Nader Nadery, a negotiator for the Afghan government.

탈레반은 7,000명의 수감자를 석방하고 UN 블랙리스트에서 무장단체 지도자들을 삭제하면 아프가니스탄에서 3개월 간 휴전하겠다고 제안했다. 아프가니스탄군과 탈레반은 작년 5,000명을 유사하게 석방한 이후 갈등을 빚어왔다고 아프간 정부 협상 대표가 주장했다.
