South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, decided he will not visit Japan for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday. The trip had also included Mr Moon’s first summit with Suga Yoshihide, Japan’s prime minister. The decision comes after a Japanese diplomat made crass comments about Mr Moon’s efforts to improve ties between the two countries.

A court in Tokyo sentenced two Americans for helping Carlos Ghosn, the former boss of carmakers Nissan and Renault, escape prosecution in Japan in 2019. Michael Taylor received a two-year sentence, and his son, Peter, received one year and eight months for helping the executive flee to Lebanon, which does not have an extradition treaty with Japan. The Taylors expressed remorse and pleaded guilty.
