Jeff Bezos, an e-commerce tycoon and founder of space startup Blue Origin, landed safely after his flight on a rocket-plane to space. In a flight that lasted just ten minutes, the New Shepard rocket-plane reached 62 miles above the Earth’s surface. The four occupants, which included Mr Bezos’s brother and an 82-year-old space-flight pioneer, experienced several moments of weightlessness during the journey.

He is currently serving a 15-month jail term for contempt of court in a separate case. His imprisonment on July 9th sparked days of protest, looting and arson.

Unusually heavy rain in recent days has caused severe flooding in Henan, a province in central China. Rivers burst their banks and streets flooded, causing transport disruption in dozens of cities. Emergency services are working to free passengers submerged in floodwaters on an underground train in Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, which was forced to suspend services. At least one person has died.

Public sentiment towards the games in Japan is increasingly negative. Yesterday Toyota, the world’s biggest carmaker, announced it would not air television adverts in Japan during the games.

Assimi Goita, Mali’s interim president, survived an assasination attempt in Bamako, the capital, during prayers for Eid al-Adha, an Islamic festival. Two men reportedly lunged at him with a knife outside the city’s Grand Mosque. Mr Goita has led two coups in the last nine months and overthrown two presidents. His office later said he was “safe and sound”.

Only 2% of government fiscal support in the covid-19 pandemic has been allocated to clean-energy measures, according to the International Energy Agency. The IEA calculates that governments worldwide have set aside around $380bn of the total $16trn in pandemic support. Under current spending plans, global carbon-dioxide emissions will reach a new record in 2023 and continue rising thereafter.
