Xi Jinping, China’s president, visited Tibet, a sometimes restive region of the country. It is the first official visit from a Chinese premier in three decades. The Chinese government is accused of suppressing the culture of Tibet, which is mostly Buddhist. Mr Xi visited Lhasa, the regional capital, which was once home to the Dalai Lamas, Tibet’s traditional leaders.

The Tokyo Olympics at last held its opening ceremony, a year late and in a near-empty stadium. The event, which was much more subdued than the launch showcases of previous Olympics, included a moment of silence for those who had died as a result of the pandemic. According to a recent poll, 78% of Japanese oppose hosting the games.

Three Chinese education companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange shed 60% of their value after a leaked memo suggested the Chinese government may force such firms to register for non-profit status. Gaotu Techedu, New Oriental Education and TAL Education lost $16bn in value in just an hour. The education business is booming in China. Two other firms, Yuanfudao and Zuoyebang, could see their IPO hopes dashed if the rules were enacted.

Taliban leaders demanded that Afghanistan’s president, Ashraf Ghani, step aside as a condition of any future peace deal. Representatives of the Islamist group have been negotiating with Afghan officials in Qatar on and off for months. Taliban warlords now control almost half of Afghanistan. The group claims it does not want to hoard power—but called for a new government.

The Great Barrier Reef—the world’s largest coral reef, off the coast of Australia—was granted a reprieve after the UNESCO World Heritage committee decided not to label the site “in danger”. It will reconsider in two years. The reef has lost half of its coral over the past 25 years because of climate change. Yesterday Venice also narrowly avoided an “in danger” listing.

The Cleveland Indians, a professional baseball team, renamed themselves the “Cleveland Guardians”, inspired by a local statue. Their previous moniker, first adopted in 1915, has long been criticised by Native American groups as being racist. Lawmakers and activists have put several teams under pressure to adopt more inclusive names. The decision in Cleveland comes a year after Washington, DC’s American-football team deleted “Redskins” from theirs.

미식축구팀 Cleveland Indians가 이름을 Cleveland Guardians로 변경했다. 이전 이름은 1915년에 도입되었으나 선주민을 차별하는 이름이라는 비난을 받았다. 이와 유사하게 1년 전 워싱턴DC 역시 팀명 Redskins를 삭제했다.

Surveys of business activity in Britain and Europe indicated a divergence in fortunes. In Britain, IHS Markit’s flash composite purchasing-managers’ index slid to 57.7 in July from 62.2 the previous month (any figure above 50 suggests expansion), thanks to rising covid-19 case numbers. In the euro area, the equivalent index increased slightly, from 59.5 to 60.6.

영국과 유럽에서 자본 활동이 상이한 것으로 나타났다. 영국 HIS 마킷 구매관리자지수(PMI)는 코로나 확진자 수 증가로 지난 달 62.2에서 7월에 57.7로 하락했다 (50 이상은 경기 확장을 나타낸다). 유럽 경우 59.5에서 60.6으로 소폭 상승했다.
