Myanmar’s ruling military junta annulled the elections won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy in November, claiming they were not “free and fair”. The generals, who staged a coup on February 1st, said the NLD attempted to take power from other parties and candidates by “misusing covid-19 restrictions”. The junta-appointed election commission also claimed to have discovered over 11m cases of voting fraud.

The value of bitcoin surged to almost $40,000—up by 12% in a day—after speculation that Amazon will soon start accepting the cryptocurrency as payment. The frenzy was fuelled by a job posting by the e-commerce giant, looking for someone to develop its “digital currency and blockchain strategy”. Attempts to close bets that bitcoin’s price would fall followed, boosting its value further.

Tunisian police raided Al Jazeera’s office and expelled the news channel’s staff a day after Kais Saied, the country’s president, suspended parliament and ousted the prime minister, Hicham Mechichi. The broadcaster said the officers had no warrant and claimed to be following orders from the judiciary. Tunisia has seen violent protests over a faltering economy and the government’s failure to reduce covid-19 cases.

Aon and Willis Towers Watson called off their planned merger because of antitrust concerns. Last month America’s Department of Justice filed a lawsuit saying the $30bn deal, which would hav0e created the world’s largest insurance broker, would probably lead to higher prices and less innovation. Aon will pay WTW a termination fee of $1bn and the companies will end their litigation with the DoJ.

A takeover that would have merged Germany’s two biggest residential landlords into one firm owning more than 500,000 flats collapsed. Vonovia had bid €19bn ($22bn) for its rival, Deutsche Wohnen. But the deal fell apart after less than 50% of Deutsche Wohnen’s shareholders voted for it. The growing power of large property firms after mergers has riled housing activists in recent years.

Israel’s defence forces carried out airstrikes against Hamas, hitting one of the Palestinian militant group’s bases. The strikes were in response to incendiary balloon attacks from the Gaza Strip that started fires in southern Israel. In May the two sides agreed on a ceasefire after 11 days of fighting and more than 200 deaths.

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low-cost carrier before the pandemic, announced that it lost €273m ($322m) in the three months to the end of June. However, the airline—which has been hard hit by coronavirus restrictions—raised forecasts for future passengers and said it was experiencing a surge in bookings, in anticipation that rules against leisure travel will soon be eased.
