Britain summoned Iran’s ambassador following an attack on the Mercer Street, an oil tanker, off the coast of Oman. Two crew members were killed on July 29th when a drone hit the Japanese-owned, Liberian-flagged vessel, which is operated by Zodiac Maritime, an Israeli firm based in London. America, Britain and Israel blame Iran for the attack.

Fighting has surged in Afghanistan as American troops complete their withdrawal.

Business surveys suggested that Asia’s economic recovery is slowing. The MPs were blocked from reaching parliament by riot police, and later dispersed. The prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, has come under growing pressure to resign over his handling of the pandemic.

Square, a digital-payments firm co-founded by Jack Dorsey, is to buy Afterpay, which offers instalment loans, for $29bn in shares. Afterpay, which was founded in Australia in 2014, allows customers to pay in instalments without owning a credit card or paying interest. The merger should allow retailers using Square’s point-of-sale technology to offer buy-now-pay-later services.

Ms Tsimanouskaya spent the night in a secure hotel after a showdown at Tokyo’s Haneda airport. She had criticised Belarusian sports officials. Her husband has fled to Ukraine.
