A five-month investigation concluded that Andrew Cuomo, the governor of America’s New York State, sexually harassed multiple women. The state’s attorney-general, Letitia James, said the governor engaged in unwanted touching and made suggestive comments, fostering a ‘hostile’ workplace and violating federal and state laws. According to the 165-page report, 11 women accused Mr Cuomo of inappropriate behaviour but he has denied wrongdoing.

미국 뉴욕주지사 성추행 의혹이 검찰 조사 결과 사실로 드러났다. 검찰은 주지사가 상대방이 원치 않은 접촉, 성적인 발언을 해 ‘적대적인’ 근무환경을 만들고 주 법을 위반했다고 발표했다. 165 페이지 보고서에 따르면 11명의 여성이 주지사의 부적절한 행위에 대해 의혹을 제기했으나 주지사는 이를 부인했다.

The Taliban, a militant group, captured most of Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of Helmand, Afghanistan. General Sami Sadat, the commander of Afghan forces in the southern province, urged residents to leave the city ahead of a major counter-attack. If Lashkar Gah falls, it would be the first provincial capital to be lost by the government since 2016.

America’s top securities regulator asked Congress for more power to protect investors in cryptocurrency markets, which he likened to the “Wild West”. Gary Gensler, chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, called the asset class “rife with fraud, scams and abuse”. He noted that crypto is used more by money launderers and cyber-thieves than as a proper medium of exchange.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, officially endorsed incoming president Ebrahim Raisi, who promised to improve the living conditions of millions of Iranians. Mr Raisi, who will be sworn in on Thursday, said that he will lift the “tyrannical sanctions imposed by America” which he blamed for the country’s economic plight. Mr Raisi is subject to American sanctions himself, relating to alleged human-rights abuses when he was a judge.

BMW posted strong earnings for the quarter to the end of June, of €4.8bn ($5.8bn) and Stellantis reported first-half net profits of €5.8bn, despite the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors, an essential component for carmaking. Stellantis, formed by the recent merger of PSA and Fiat Chrysler, substantially increased forecasts for their full-year earnings. BMW remained more cautious about its outlook.

자동차 필수 부품인 반도체가 전세계적으로 공급이 부족한 가운데 2분기 기준 BMW는 48억 유로, Stellantis는 58억 유로의 수익을 기록했다. PSA와 Fiat Chrysler가 합병해 만들어진 Stellantis는 연수익 전망을 상당히 높였다. BMW는 전망을 조심스럽게 내다봤다.

Inflation in Turkey rose by more than expected, as food and energy prices increased sharply. Consumer prices grew by 19% in July compared with a year earlier; prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 24.9%; energy by 21.5%. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants lower interest rates, but the jump in prices makes a loosening of monetary policy less likely.

Karsten Warholm broke his own world record for the 400 metres hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics. The Norwegian athlete won a gold medal with his time of 45.94 seconds. Elsewhere, Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah became the first woman to win double gold in the sprints for two Olympics in a row. Simone Biles, the much-heralded American gymnast, won bronze in the beam final.
