The Biden administration called for half of all new vehicles sold in America to be electric by 2030, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. It is a target, rather than a legal requirement. Mr Biden will also mandate that cars meet a higher miles-per-gallon performance than that set by the previous administration. Carmakers endorsed the pledges at the White House.

미 바이든 정부는 탄소배출량을 줄이기 위해 2030년까지 미국에서 판매되는 차량의 절반이 전기차가 되도록 하겠다고 발표했다. 이는 법적 요건이 아닌 목표다. 또 바이든은 연비 또한 전 정부가 설정한 것보다 높아야 한다고 강조했다. 자동차업체는 미 정부 발표를 지지했다.

An armed group in Burkina Faso killed 30 people, including civilians, soldiers and members of a pro-government militia, the country’s defence ministry said. At least ten of the assailants were also slain. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali have been plagued by jihadist violence as groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and Islamic State have proliferated in the Sahel.

Greg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, will convene a second special legislative session on Saturday in a third attempt to pass voting restrictions. Last month Democratic lawmakers fled the state to deny him a quorum in the Republican-held legislature. If Democrats decide to end their boycott, Mr Abbott has said they will be arrested and forcibly returned to the Capitol as they enter the state.

Barcelona have been desperately trying to cut their wage bill to afford to rehire him. Mr Messi, who has spent his entire professional career with the club, will see his choice of destinations limited unless he is willing to reduce his wage demands.

Mr Biden’s directive cited “compelling foreign policy reasons”, in other words, the Chinese government’s crackdown on democracy, as the justification for the move. Other lawmakers want to make it easier for Hong Kongers to obtain refugee status in America.

Meanwhile, firms are increasingly requiring vaccines for white-collar types but not for lower-wage hourly workers. Tyson Foods, a meat producer, which will require all of its employees to get the jab, is an exception.

Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York state, will probably face impeachment in the state legislature regarding allegations that he sexually harassed multiple women, among other things. Lawmakers requested that he submit evidence in his defence by August 13th, signalling their intent to open impeachment proceedings. If charged in the state assembly, he could be removed from office.
