The total number of non-farm jobs in America rose by 943,000 in July, more than the 870,000 that economists had forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 5.4% from 5.9% the month before. The data suggest that the country’s economic recovery continues apace and that the labour shortage dragging on growth recently has eased.

The Taliban captured the city of Zaranj in Afghanistan’s Nimroz province. It is the first provincial capital to fall to the resurgent militant group during their current offensive against the Afghan government and allied forces since America announced its withdrawal from the country. The Taliban also assassinated the government’s top media officer in Kabul, the national capital, during Friday prayers.

Poland and Lithuania appealed to European institutions for help stemming a surge of mostly Iraqi, Afghan and African migrants entering their countries via Belarus. It is probably retaliation after both countries harboured prominent Belarusians escaping the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. Poland and Lithuania condemned his “weaponisation of irregular migration”. Meanwhile, Poland’s justice minister accused the European Union of “blackmail” for demanding reforms to the country’s judicial system. Poland should not remain part of the EU “at any cost,” he said.

Apple’s cryptographic system will compare users’ stored photos against a database of images held by America’s National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Matches will be forwarded to the organisation for investigation. Privacy activists expressed alarm about the potential surveillance of millions of users.

A former assistant to Andrew Cuomo filed a criminal complaint against him with the Albany County sheriff’s department, alleging that the governor of New York state groped her. It could count as a misdemeanor if prosecutors pursue it. Several district-attorneys’ offices are investigating allegations of sexual harassment against him. He also faces impeachment and possible removal from office by the state legislature.

China’s foreign ministry lashed out at President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Hong Kongers resident in America to extend their stays by 18 months. It said that Mr Biden had “nakedly intervened” in the internal affairs of Hong Kong and China. Mr Biden cited “compelling foreign policy reasons”—in other words, the Chinese government’s crackdown on basic liberties—as justification for the move.
