Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s dictator, sent the armed forces to help areas of the country that flooded after heavy rains, according to state media. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the worst-hit areas. The floods threaten North Korea’s agricultural production at a particularly precarious time—in June Mr Kim was unusually candid in describing the country’s food situation as “tense”.

Government forces have lost control of Kunduz, a strategically important city in the north of Afghanistan, to the Taliban. Five regional capital have been captured by the jihadist group in recent days. Kunduz is well connected by road to other major Afghan cities and important for access to the northern part of the country.

During the games Japan’s covid-19 numbers also toppled records (though officials insist that the infection rates are unrelated to the Olympics). The games’ legacy will doubtless be a contested one.

Philip Morris, the tobacco giant, again trumped the Carlyle Group’s bid for Vectura, which makes inhalers. The private-equity firm agreed to buy Vectura in May, but its hopes of a quick takeover went up in smoke. Philip Morris made a better offer, leading to a bidding war. It values Vectura at $1.4bn.

Saudi Aramco announced that this year’s second-quarter profits were nearly four times as large as last year’s. The world’s biggest oil company saw its net profits hit $25.5bn, compared with $6.6bn in the same period of the previous year, when prices were low and demand suppressed by the covid-19 pandemic.

Protests marking the 33rd anniversary of an uprising against a previous military dictatorship broke out across Myanmar. Aung San Suu Kyi, the country’s de facto leader until February’s coup, first rose to prominence in the so-called 1988 Uprising. It ended in the armed forces opening fire on protestors and arresting hundreds. Similar scenes have played out in the country in recent months, too.

미얀마에서 전 군부 정권에 대한 민주화 항쟁 33주년을 맞아 시위가 일어났다. 아웅산수치 고문은 1988년 민주화 항쟁으로 세간에 알려졌다. 당시 항쟁으로 인해 군부는 시위대 발포 및 체포를 중단했다. 비슷한 사태가 현재 미얀마에서 일어나고 있다.

Thousands of people were forced from their homes as wildfires continue to spread across Greece and Turkey. Over the last ten days fires have enveloped more than 140,000 acres in Greece alone. Meanwhile the Dixie Fire, California’s largest standalone fire on record, has now burned more than 463,700 acres and incinerated the town of Greenville.
