Krafton, the South Korean firm behind “PUBG: Battlegrounds”, a shoot-’em-up video game, had a disappointing debut on the Korean stockmarket. Its share price fell as much as 20% before closing down by nearly 9%, amid concerns about a clampdown on China’s tech sector and that its valuation of over $20bn was too high.

게임 PUBG 기업 Krafton이 한국에서 상장됐으나 기대 이하였다. 중국에서 기술 산업에 대한 규제가 강화되고 있으며 Krafton 시총 200억 달러가 과대평가됐다는 지적이 나오는 가운데 Krafton 주가는 (공모가보다) 20% 하락한 후 상승해 9% 낮아진 수준에서 마감했다.

Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, announced his resignation. A report authorised by the state’s attorney-general found that Mr Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women. Mr Cuomo claimed the most serious accusations had “no credible factual basis”, and suggested the whole controversy was “politically motivated”. His resignation will take effect in two weeks, when Kathy Hochul, hitherto Mr Cuomo’s deputy, will become the state’s first female governor.

Business confidence in Germany fell for the third consecutive month in August. The indicator of economic sentiment (calculated as the balance between optimistic and pessimistic analysts) fell by 22.9 points compared with July to 40.4 points, its lowest level since November. Worse may be to come. Europe’s biggest economy faces a possible fourth wave of covid-19 infections.

Six EU countries have urged the European Commission, the bloc’s executive, not to stop them sending failed asylum seekers from Afghanistan back home even as the Taliban, a ruthless Islamist militant group, makes sweeping advances across the country. The Afghan government had asked for a suspension of such deportations for three months, but the six, including Germany, say that this would only encourage more people to become refugees.

America’s Senate passed a bipartisan infrastructure package worth $1trn designed to fix the country’s road and rail networks, improve broadband provision and fund climate-change adaptation. An additional $550bn will be raised to pay for the bill, which will increase the deficit by $256bn over a decade. Democrats will now concentrate on pushing their $3.5trn budget proposal to expand the social safety net.

A decentralised financial network said hackers breached its platform. Over $600m in cryptocurrency is thought to have been stolen from Poly Network, which lets people swap digital tokens built on different blockchains. That would make the theft among the biggest ever in crypto-land. The chair of America’s Securities and Exchange Commission, a financial regulator, recently said that such DeFi platforms ought to protect investors better.

That same clampdown led SoftBank, a Japanese tech investor, to announce it would cut its holdings in Chinese startups. Masayoshi Son, the firm’s founder, said he will take a “wait-and-see stance” in the coming years. Softbank, which runs the world’s biggest tech venture-capital fund, is highly exposed in China, largely through its stake in Alibaba, an e-commerce giant.

일본의 IT 투자 기업 SoftBank가 중국 스타트업에 대한 투자를 중단하겠다고 밝혔다. SoftBank 설립자 Som은 향후 몇 년 동안 “기다리며 지켜보겠다”고 했다. SoftBank는 세계에서 가장 큰 기술 투자 기업으로 중국 최대 전자상거래 기업 Alibaba을 통해 중국에 투자해온 것으로 잘 알려져 있다.
