Germany and the Netherlands suspended deportations of failed asylum seekers back to Afghanistan, a reversal of their previous position.

The details will be fiercely contested: Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat, said he has “serious concerns”. His vote will be crucial when the budget returns to the Senate, where the Democrats must secure 50 votes. First it must pass the House of Representatives.

Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s newly inaugurated hardline president, revealed his cabinet, which includes Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, a staunchly anti-West diplomat, as foreign minister. It is unclear what role Mr Amir-Abdollahian would play in ongoing talks to salvage the moribund nuclear deal signed by Iran and six other countries in 2015. Mr Raisi’s selection will need to be approved by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader.

Sudan said that it will hand over its former dictator, Omar al-Bashir, and other officials to the International Criminal Court. They are wanted for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide arising from the conflict in the western Darfur region, in which around 300,000 people died. Mr Bashir was first indicted by the ICC in 2009 and toppled in a coup in 2019.

The future of Poland’s right-wing coalition government is in doubt after the prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, sacked his deputy, Jaroslaw Gowin, the leader of a junior partner in the coalition. Mr Gowin and the Agreement party oppose legislation, to be voted on today, to change a media law to, in effect, silence a television channel critical of the government.

A federal judge ruled that Donald Trump’s accounting firm must hand Congress his financial records from 2017 and 2018. But the judge rejected their request for earlier records dating back to 2011, saying it was not sufficiently justified.
