The build-up of military forces around Ukraine continued. According to American officials, Russia is sending 14 more Battalion Tactical Groups to positions near the Ukrainian border and has in place an estimated 70% of the combat forces needed to mount a full invasion. America also said it would send nearly 3,000 soldiers to NATO allies in eastern Europe, although Joe Biden, the president, said that these troops would not be deployed to fight within Ukraine.

Spain’s prime minister revealed plans to launch the country’s first official investigation into sexual abuse committed by Catholic clergy. Pedro Sánchez said that an ombudsman should compile a report based on the findings of an independent inquiry. The body representing Spain’s bishops has objected to such a comprehensive investigation: it says complaints should be made on an individual basis to regional dioceses.

Iraq’s Supreme Court temporarily suspended Hoshyar Zebari from running for the presidency, citing historic corruption charges against him, which he denies. Mr Zebari was the frontrunner for the position, which was due to be voted on by parliament on Monday. But MPs in the largest bloc in parliament said they would boycott the session, making a vote unlikely.

Mr Saied has been consolidating power in what was once the region’s lone democratic beacon: last year he dismissed parliament and sacked the prime minister.

She was given a state funeral on Sunday, which will be followed by two days of national mourning.

Investors withdrew an average of $61m from digital asset vehicles each week in January, marking the quickest pace of withdrawals from cryptocurrency investment products in at least a year. Vehicles which provide exposure to crypto assets attracted billions of dollars in 2021, but as the price of bitcoin tumbled in early 2022 investors pulled back. Ever tumultuous, bitcoin’s price rose again on Saturday, hitting nearly $42,000.
