South Korea’s presidential candidates officially began campaigning ahead of the election in March. The race between the two main parties is expected to be very close. Of the 14 candidates, the frontrunners are Lee Jae-myung, of the ruling Democratic Party, and Yoon Suk-yeol, of the conservative People Power Party. Roughly equal in the polls, neither is much liked by the public.

Novak Djokovic claimed not to be against vaccines but said he would not be forced to take the covid-19 jab. The world’s top-ranked men’s tennis player, who was deported from Australia last month amid controversy over his vaccination status, told the BBC that he “supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body” and would be willing to forgo future trophies.

The lower house of Russia’s parliament voted to ask Vladimir Putin to recognise Donetsk and Luhansk, two breakaway regions of Ukraine, a step short of outright annexation. Some officials in Russia suggest this might be a way out of the current crisis. Russia has said it is removing some of the troops stationed near its border with Ukraine now they have completed their “combat training exercises”. Markets welcomed to the news. But Ukraine’s government and NATO said they needed more evidence of de-escalation.

Prince Andrew reached a tentative settlement for an undisclosed amount with Virginia Giuffre, the woman who had accused him of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager. The deal will end a civil lawsuit against him in New York. The Duke of York has denied her allegations. He commended her “bravery” in a statement announcing the settlement.

Police in Honduras moved to arrest former president Juan Orlando Hernández after America issued a request for his extradition. Mr Hernández was president between 2014 and January this year. In 2021 his younger brother, Tony Hernández, was given a life sentence in America for drug trafficking. Evidence given at that trial, and a different one, accused JOH, as he is known, of taking money from drug cartels

Ethiopia’s parliament voted to end the country’s state of emergency three months early, saying that the security situation had stabilised. Six months of emergency powers were imposed in November, when Tigrayan rebels threatened the capital, Addis Ababa. The government hopes the move will help the economy. Aid agencies hope for better access to the millions who do not have enough to eat.
