America issued its starkest warning yet that an invasion of Ukraine may be imminent. Four-fifths of Russian forces at the border are in a combat-ready position and they “could go at any hour now” once they get an order from President Vladimir Putin, said an official at the Pentagon. Meanwhile the Kremlin said separatists in the Donbas region had asked it for military support “to repel the aggression of the Ukrainian regime” (Ukraine denies acting offensively). Earlier multiple government agencies and at least one bank in Ukraine were hit by a cyberattack, crashing their websites.

The Biden administration said it would place sanctions on the firm in charge of building Nord Stream 2, the gas pipeline whose certification Germany halted on Tuesday. Its parent company is Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned gas giant. Meanwhile, the EU named Russia’s defence minister and the chief of staff to President Vladimir Putin as targets of its sanctions.

A meeting between America’s secretary of state and his Russian counterpart was also cancelled.

Authorities had earlier asked banks to unfreeze the accounts of people protesting against covid-19 restrictions.

Islamic State in West Africa Province, an offshoot of Boko Haram, another terrorist group, claimed to have killed and wounded dozens of Nigerian soldiers in recent days. The attacks are alleged to have occurred in Borno state, in the north-east of the country. The Nigerian army did not confirm the reports, and said their soldiers had killed several “extremists”.

Tsai Ing-wen suggested that Russia’s actions in Ukraine could affect the “morale of Taiwanese society”. China, which considers Taiwan its own territory, has increased its military activity around the island over the last two years.
