American officials said Russia has asked China for military equipment to aid its invasion of Ukraine. Jake Sullivan, America’s national security adviser, will meet Yang Jiechi, a senior Chinese official, in Rome on Monday. The White House announced the meeting as part of “ongoing efforts” to manage competition between America and China and to discuss the impact of Russia’s assault on Ukraine.

More than 2,100 residents have been killed in Mariupol, a city in south-east Ukraine, according to local officials. The besieged port city was hit by at least 22 Russian strikes over the weekend and parts of it have been captured by Russian forces. The city council said the last reserves of food and water were running out.

Both are in a region of the country that has so far escaped heavy Russian attacks. The attacks took place as Russia warned America that arms shipments to Ukraine, most of which are coming from Poland, would be seen as targets. The Biden administration has approved an additional $200m in military aid to Ukraine.

Reporters were banned from Irpin, a satellite city of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, after an American journalist was killed there. Brent Renaud was fatally shot by Russian forces on Sunday; two other journalists were also wounded. Oleksandr Markushyn, Irpin’s mayor, said the ban on journalists was to protect both them and local “defenders”.

The European Union may impose sanctions on Roman Abramovich, an oligarch who is trying to dispose of Chelsea Football Club, and 14 other prominent Russians. The move would follow Britain’s decision last week to freeze Mr Abramovich’s assets and bar him from travel. The bloc will also restrict Russian steel imports and exports of luxury goods from Europe.

Mr Matveyev is the second local mayor to be arrested by the Russians. On Friday Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol, was seen in a video being escorted out of a building by Russian soldiers.
