Reports of survivors emerged from the bombing of a theatre in Mariupol, although the number of casualties is unknown. More than 1,000 women and children had been sheltering in the theatre which was shelled by Russian forces. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said the mayor of Melitopol, who was detained last week by Russian soldiers, has been freed.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, addressed the German Bundestag via video, drawing a standing ovation. In appealing for more support for his country, he made emotional references to Germany’s own recent history, in particular of the east being occupied by Russia and the Holocaust. He also chided some German companies for still doing business in Russia.

Having been publicly critical of the war she quit the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to join the Dutch National Ballet. She is the most famous Russian star to quit the country over the war.

Russia has lost more than 7,000 troops in the war, according to American intelligence officials, speaking to the New York Times. This is a higher figure than the number of Americans killed over 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile Britain’s defence ministry said the Russian invasion is “largely stalled on all fronts” with minimal progress made on “land, sea or air”.
