Major Indexes Rose as Investors Mostly Shrug Off Tariff Threats to Brazil (WSJ. 202507010)
U.S. stock indexes rose as investors mostly shrugged off President Trump's latest tariffs targeting Brazil. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 192 points to close at 44,651. The S&P added 17 points, and the Nasdaq rose 19 points; both the S&P and Nasdaq closed at new record highs thanks, in part, to Nvidia, which also hit a new record high after becoming the world's first $4 trillion company. Shares in the chip maker rose three-quarters of a percent. Among the many trade messages issued to foreign leaders this week, the new 50% levy on Brazilian imports to the U.S. was the highest. Trump also criticized Brazil's legal actions against former president Jair Bolsonaro, as well as U.S. tech companies. The country's current president said his government would reciprocate but didn't give details. Elsewhere in the market, copper futures rose about two and a half percent after Trump said the U.S. will impose a 50% tariff on the metal at the beginning of August, and mining company Freeport-McMoRan rallied three and a half percent. Among other individual companies, shares of WK Kellogg surged 30.6% after Nutella maker Ferrero struck a roughly $3 billion deal to buy the iconic breakfast cereal company. Stock in rare earth miner MP Materials jumped after the U.S. Defense Department said it will take a 15% stake in the company. Shares rose 50.6%. And shares of cryptocurrency exchange operator Coinbase rose 4% as Bitcoin added to its record high hit Wednesday.
