Incumbent Yoweri Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, was awarded 59% of the vote while Mr Wine won 35%. But Mr Wine’s legal challenge claims the result is invalid on several grounds, including the extensive use of violence.

He awaits trial for colluding with foreign forces, an offence under a new national security law imposed by the Hong Kong legislature at the behest of the Chinese government. Mr Lai was arrested in December for his role in protests in 2019.

America’s congressional budget office said the economy will return to its pre-pandemic size by the middle of 2021 even without a further stimulus package. The projection is an improvement on last summer’s forecast—many sectors of the economy adapted faster to the pandemic than expected, helped in part by the $900bn recovery package approved by Congress in December.
