AI Worries Push Nasdaq Lower (WJS. 20250829)

US stocks finished August on a lower note as a retreat in artificial intelligence-related shares pulled markets down. The Nasdaq slid 1.2% while the S&P 500 fell 0.6% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.2%. The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure held steady in July, and traders are largely expecting an interest rate cut in September. Elsewhere Gold closed at a new record while oil futures and Bitcoin prices declined. Among individual companies, Dell shares tumbled 9% after the company offered soft guidance for its artificial intelligence business. Other technology stocks also fell with Nvidia shares dropping more than 3% as Alibaba reportedly created a new AI chip to fill the void left by Nvidia in China. Caterpillar stock slipped more than 3.5% after the construction equipment maker said it expects to take a bigger hit from tariffs and Kraft Heinz shares rose 2.7%.
