Federal Judge Orders Winding Down of ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ (WSJ. 20250822)
Two Federal Reserve officials are offering competing labor market assessments, highlighting the looming divisions over whether to cut interest rates next month. Cleveland Fed President, Beth Hammack, told the Journal she does not support a rate reduction, citing an inflation picture that is, quote, "Too high and rising in a labor market that remains reasonably good." Separately, Boston Fed President Susan Collins signaled openness to a cut as soon as next month, noting the risks of weaker than expected employment trends. A federal judge has ordered the government to dismantle much of Alligator Alcatraz, a flagship immigrant detention facility in the Everglades Wetlands Preserve in Florida. The ruling stems from a lawsuit from two nonprofits and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, which alleged that the government skipped an environmental impact review, threatening the wetlands, endangered animals, and the tribe villages nearby. Yesterday, the judge ordered the removal of key equipment and the halt of new construction, and said the Center shouldn't accept new detainees. A Florida State official has filed a notice of appeal. And we are exclusively reporting that equity stakes may soon become a larger part of the Trump administration's approach to chip makers, with a government official telling the Journal that the US is interested in owning equity in some companies that receive money from the 2022 Chips Act. The official said the administration isn't looking to own equity in companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing that are increasing their investment in the US, but businesses that aren't boosting pledges could need to give the government equity in exchange for Chip Act subsidies.
