Nvidia Shares Slip After Earnings (WSJ. 20250828)
The aftermath from Nvidia's quarterly results yesterday is rippling through markets. The chipmaker beat Wall Street expectations except in its key AI chip segment. Nvidia shares edged lower in pre-market trading after the world's most valuable company forecast cooling demand for its AI chips. Shares in TSMC, a key Nvidia supplier, retreated in Taiwan, and Chinese semiconductor stocks jumped as Nvidia's results highlighted the challenges to its business in Asia's largest economy. Plus, China's BYD outsold Tesla in Europe again last month. It's a sign that Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker continues to face stiff competition from its Chinese rival as it expands aggressively in the continent. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, new car registrations for BYD models more than tripled on-year to nearly 9,700 vehicles across the EU in July. In contrast, registrations for Tesla models contracted more than 42% to 6,600 cars. BYD first outsold Tesla in the continent in April, according to data from a consumer research group. Finally, Taco Bell is rethinking the use of voice artificial intelligence at its drive-throughs. Since last year, the chain has rolled out voice AI-powered ordering at more than 500 drive-through locations, but customers have complained about glitches and delays. Others have trolled the system by ordering 18,000 cups of water, for example. Taco Bell's chief Digital and Technology officer said it might not make sense to exclusively use AI at every drive-through.
