Donald Trump’s legal team and the Democrats in the House of Representatives prosecuting him in next week’s impeachment trial have filed briefs with the Senate. Mr Navalny’s transgression was to fail to return at once to Russia from Germany, where he was recovering from a poisoning attempt, which Mr Navalny, and many others, blame on Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president.

The month-long extension casts further doubt on this year’s Olympic games, which are due to begin in Tokyo on July 23rd.

Both houses of Brazil’s legislature elected speakers endorsed by Jair Bolsonaro, the president. The appointments may thwart efforts to impeach him over his handling of covid-19, which has killed 224,000 Brazilians. But they come with an ideological price. Mr Bolsonaro is now aligned with politicians he once accused of corruption and vowed never to work with.
