Elon Musk Says Optimus Robots Will Make Up Most of Tesla’s Value (WSJ. 20250903)
Elon Musk says, "As Tesla shifts its focus to robots, 80% of the company's value will be driven by its humanoid robot, Optimus." That's according to Musk in a post on his X account. The robot is designed to perform tasks like factory work and household chores. In a July earnings call, Musk said Tesla aims to scale its Optimus production to 1 million units a year within the next five years. He said the third model of Optimus prototypes are due to launch by the end of the year. Anthropic's valuation has reached $183 billion thanks to a new funding round that brings the company $13 billion in fresh cash. The maker of the generative AI model Claude initially set out to raise $5 billion, but zipped through that thanks to strong demand from venture investors. Anthropic's valuation has nearly tripled since March. Chinese EV maker NIO has missed expectations for the second quarter amid intensified competition. Its quarterly loss widened even as revenue rose nearly 9%. The company reported a net loss of the equivalent of more than $720 million last quarter. But momentum has strengthened in the current quarter. NIO posted record monthly sales for August with deliveries jumping 55% to more than 31,000 units. And drone swarms powered by artificial intelligence have now entered the battlefield. We report exclusively that in a new frontier for warfare, Ukraine is using AI to coordinate drone attacks on Russian positions. Through software developed by Ukrainian company Swarmer, groups of drones are able to communicate and make decisions independent of their operator. The US and other countries, including China, France, Russia, and South Korea are also developing swarm technology. But the use of AI on the battlefield raises ethical concerns around machines deciding the fate of combatants and civilians.
