Google Avoids Harshest Antitrust Penalties (WSJ. 20250903)
Alphabet shares rallied in off-hours trading after Google avoided harsh antitrust penalties for its conduct in the U.S. search market. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta rejected the government's call for a forced spin-off of Google's Chrome browser, but said the company can't pay to be the exclusive search engine on devices and browsers. Wall Street analysts scored the ruling a huge win for Google and Apple since it allowed an existing arrangement to continue in which Google pays Apple more than $20 billion a year to be the default search provider on the Safari browser. The world's biggest contract chip-maker, TSMC, will not be able to send chip-making equipment from the U.S. to China in 2026 in a move that'll make it even harder for Chinese manufacturers to access foreign chips. That's after the Commerce Department revoked a waiver that enabled the Taiwan semiconductor company to do so without seeking prior U.S. approval. Following the news, U.S. listed TSMC shares slipped off-hours with the stock also down in Asian trading. And Walt Disney will pay $10 million to settle allegations from the Federal Trade Commission that claimed the company unlawfully collected children's data to use in targeted advertising. The FTC said that Disney allowed personal data to be collected from children who viewed YouTube videos aimed at kids, without notifying parents or obtaining their consent, which is required by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule.
미 법원의 판결에 따라 Google이 심각한 제재를 피하며 Alphabet 주가가 상승했음. 법원은 Google이 Chrome 브라우저를 강제 매각하지 않아도 되나 향후 기기 및 브라우저 업체와 배타적 게약을 체결할 수 없다고 판결함. 현재 Apple의 검색 엔진 및 Safari 브라우저에서 Google이 기본값으로 설정되기 위해 Google이 Apple에 매년 200억 달러를 지급하는 계약은 유지될 수 있으므로 Google이 승리한 것으로 평가되고 있음. 한편 대만 반도체 제조업체 TSMC가 2026년부터 미 반도체 기기를 중국에 이전할 수 없게 됨. 이로써 중국 제조업체는 해외 반도체 사용이 더 어려워질 것임. 미 정부는 사전 승인 없이 TSMC에 위 활동을 허가한 조치를 철회했음. 발표 이후 미국에 상장한 TSMC 주가는 시간 외 거래에서 하락했으며 아시아 거래에서도 하락했음. 한편 Walt Disney가 연방거래위원회(FTC)와의 합의에 따라 타겟 광고를 위해 어린이 정보를 불법적으로 수집한 혐의로 1천만 달러의 벌금을 납부할 예정임. FTC는 Disney가 부모에게 공지 및 허가 없이 YouTube를 시청한 어린이의 개인정보를 수집하며 아동 온라인 개인정보보호(COPPA) 규정을 위반했다고 발표함
