U.S. Job Openings Unexpectedly Fell in July (WSJ. 20250903)

Total open jobs in the US unexpectedly slipped in July to 7.2 million, down from 7.4 million a month earlier. That's according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics out today. The new data defied consensus expectations that openings would hold steady, and overall, it paints a picture of a labor market that's slowing but hasn't stalled out. Macy's is lifting its full year outlook after its quarterly same store sales grew for the first time since 2022, beating Wall Street's expectations. Shoppers continue to buy new clothes, jewelry, and watches despite higher prices stemming from tariffs, but the company expects that shoppers will become more choosy due to tariffs and other economic pressures in the second half of the year. Macy's said it's working with suppliers to manage tariff-related costs, including raising prices on some merchandise.
