U.S. Jobs Growth Stalled in August (WSJ. 20250905)
The Labor Department said today that the US added 22,000 jobs in August. That's below the gain of 75,000 jobs that economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected to see, and a sign that the labor market is deteriorating markedly. The government also revised its numbers from earlier in the summer and said that the economy lost a net 13,000 jobs in June, the first such decline since December 2020. The unemployment rate, which is based on a separate survey from the jobs figures, was 4.3%, up slightly from the 4.2% in July. The report likely seals the case for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point at its next meeting in two weeks. Tesla's board is asking investors to approve a new pay package for CEO Elon Musk that could be worth as much as $1 trillion over the next decade. According to a financial filing published today, the proposed arrangements could see Musk, already the world's wealthiest person, awarded installments of shares that are contingent on Tesla hitting a series of milestones such as reaching a market capitalization of eight and a half trillion dollars. It's current market cap is $1 trillion. The scale of Musk's compensation at Tesla has been a point of contention in the past. His 2018 pay deal was struck down by a Delaware judge who said the process was deeply flawed and criticized the company's board for a lack of transparency. And UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned today after admitting she underpaid tax on the purchase of a new home. The government's ethics adviser concluded Rayner had broken a ministerial code of conduct after she admitted to not paying 40,000 pounds or about $54,000 of tax she owed on the property, which was her second home. It's the latest blow to Prime Minister Kier Starmer, whose Labor government has cratered in popularity a year after he swept to power with a large majority.
