U.S. Stocks Tick Down Following Weak Jobs Report (WSJ. 20250905)

U.S. stocks fell today after a weak jobs report strengthened the case for a Federal Reserve interest rate cut. The economy added just 22,000 jobs in August, far below forecasts. Markets initially rose on hopes that lower interest rates would boost corporate profits, but later reversed course on concerns that rate cuts may not be enough to jumpstart economic growth. Broadcom stock surged over 9% following upbeat quarterly results and news that it'll design chips for OpenAI. Lululemon shares slid 19% after the athletic apparel maker lowered its outlook for the year. Docusign stock rose nearly 5% after the electronic signature company boosted its annual forecast. And Smith and Wesson shares rose 6.5% after the gunmaker posted better than expected earnings and sales driven by demand for new firearms products.
