회색의 중요성

As humans we share an appetite for black and white. I refer neither to the suffocating darkness of a power cut in the underground toilet cubicle of an Austrian hotel, nor the unforgivable brightness of a tinder match at 3am. I speak of our desire for the concrete and absolute certainty with which we strive to nourish our decisions.
Our species is marked by the stubborn persistence to question our raison d’être; to find out if we enter the universe for anything more than consumption, creation, and ultimately, awaiting death. It is actually all very well explained in a book available at most libraries and written 2000 years ago. Religions provide physical, black and white answers to the most perplexing of questions regarding the very nature of our existence. Each religion offers a set of concrete moral guidelines to steer a lifetime of decisions. Undeniably, the effect of widespread religion is beneficial. It is, however, absurd to believe that a single and absolute morality can apply to billions of people in whatever situation they may find themselves. Morality is not absolute, but its simplification allows it to reach the numbers of people which religions do. This use of black and white morality to reach masses does not just limit itself to religion.
Imagine now, black and white turn to red and blue. You walk into a shop, buy an assault rifle without a permit, kill a human and are consequently submitted to lethal injection by the government which allowed you to go buy the gun; where are you? The country where both Donald and Bernard arguably the most extreme candidates in their parties, have enjoyed recent success. The media hails this as a great surprise, despite itself spewing much of the polarised information which influences the way people vote. Media outlets benefit from sensationalising stories to force emotive reactions and often promote some political ideology. As such, there is no search for a balance or middle ground, just bold statements claiming absolute truths, by politicians and media outlets aiming to connect with a large number of people.
Simple answers to complex questions do not exist, but grey answers don’t win votes. Donald Trump’s notoriously blasé comments on issues of foreign policy and immigration have earned him tremendous support. People don’t want to think about the details of things, they are happy to just support an extreme solution that sounds simple and believable. “I will quickly and decisively bomb the hell out of ISIS” he claims, ignoring the grey matter; the lives of thousands of innocent Syrian lives. Politicians and the media, are however, a reflection of the people they serve. We tend to search for the right and wrong, never in between. Political propaganda ignores that reality is made up of infinite shades of grey, to target us with simplified and easy to consume chunks of black and white opinion.
Our opinions are carefully amassed over time through our personal experience of the world, and as such, we take care to defend them. A conversation inherently involves the participation of more than one opinion. It is all too easy for opposing opinions to push each other apart in order for pride to better defend them. Contrasting extremes can lead to the discovery of a middle ground and formation of new opinions, but this requires open mindedness and a will to learn. A defining feature of our generation, is that we are more able than ever to choose the media we consume and as such, risk alienating ourselves from reality. Be accepting of alternate opinions, express your own and be grateful to live in a society where they can coexist. They coexist because nothing is black and white and we know nothing; only that we know nothing. So think grey.
사람들은 흑백을 좋아한다. 오스트리아의 한 호텔의 불이 나가 숨이 막히도록 깜깜한 화장실 구석이나, 새벽 세 시에 데이팅 앱이 울리며 화면이 밝게 켜지는 것 따위를 말하는 것은 아니다. 나는 분명하고 무조건적인 확실함과 이를 통해 보다 나은 결정을 내리고자 하는 우리의 갈망에 대해 말하는 것이다.
인류는 존재의 의미, 이를테면 우리가 단순히 소비, 생산 그리고 궁극적으로는 죽음을 맞이하는 것 이외에 이 세상에 존재하는 이유가 있는지에 대해 끊임없이 묻는 그 집요함으로 차별화된다. 이는 대부분의 도서관에 있는 2천 년도 전에 쓰인 책들에 매우 잘 설명되어있다. 종교들은 존재의 본질과 관련된 복잡한 문제들에 단순한 흑백의 답을 준다. 각 종교는 일생동안 내리는 선택들을 좌지우지하는 구체적인 도덕률을 제시한다. 많은 이들이 믿는 종교의 긍정적 영향력은 부정할 수 없다만, 다양한 상황에 있는 수억 명의 사람들에게 하나의 무조건적인 도덕률이 적용 가능하다고 보는 건 어불성설이다. 물론, 완벽하지 않은 도덕이라는 것을 종교에서 하는 것처럼 단순화함으로써 많은 사람들에게 영향을 미칠 수 있기는 하다. 사실 다수에게 접근하기 위해 흑백 논리에 근거한 도덕률을 제시하는 것은 단순히 종교만의 것은 아니다.
자, 흑백에서 청홍으로 바뀌었다고 상상해보자. 상점에 들어가서 허가가 필요 없는 자동 소총을 사서 살인을 저지르고 그 결과에 따라 정부에서 당신에게 사형선고를 내린다. 당신이 그 총을 살 수 있게 한 그 정부가 말이다. 우리가 사는 이 사회가 도대체 무엇인가? 미국에서 가장 논란이 많은 후보들이라 할 수 있는 도날드와 버니가 최근 승리를 이루어냈다. 미디어는 엄청난 놀라움을 드러내지만 동시에 투표권자들에게 영향을 미치는 양극화된 정보를 제공하고 있다. 언론사들은 자극적인 기사를 내놓으면서 독자에게 감정적인 반응을 강요하고 때로는 정치적 이데올로기를 홍보한다. 이처럼 정치인이나 매스컴 등은 더 많은 사람들과 소통하기 위해 균형이나 중도가 아닌 대담한 말들을 마치 사실인양 내뱉을 뿐이다.
복잡한 질문에 대한 간단한 답은 존재하지 않는다. 다만 회색의 답으로는 선거를 이길 수 없다. 도날드 트럼프의 이민과 외교 방책에 대한 악명 높은 무관심한 의견들은 그에게 오히려 엄청난 지지를 가져다주었다. 사람들은 세세한 것을 따지기 싫어하기에 간단하고 믿을만한 극단적인 해결 방책을 기꺼이 지지한다. "빠르고 그리고 확실하게 ISIS에 폭탄을 퍼부을 겁니다”라고 트럼프는 말한다. 수천 명의 죄 없는 시리아 난민들과 같은 회색의 중간 것들을 간과한 채 말이다. 그러나 정치인과 미디어는 사실 시민들과 독자들을 반영하고 있을 뿐이다. 우리는 옳고 그름을 찾으려 한다. 그 중간은 찾지 않는다. 정치선전은 현실이 무한한 음영의 회색으로 되어있다는 것을 무시한 채 간단화되고 단순한 방법으로 된 흑백논리를 우리에게 강요한다.
각자의 의견은 이 세상에서의 경험들이 쌓이며 조금씩 생겨나며 그렇게 생긴 각자의 의견을 우리는 변호한다. 대화는 기본적으로 하나 이상의 의견을 포함한다. 서로 반대되는 의견들이 부딪힐 때 각자의 의견을 변호하는 것은 너무나 당연한 이치이다. 반대되는 극단이 서로 부딪히면서 그 중간에 있는 새로운 것을 발견할 수도 있다. 하지만 이는 열린 마음과 배우려 하는 의지를 바탕으로 한다. 우리 세대의 특징은 우리가 소비하는 미디어를 선택할 그 어느 때보다 큰 자유가 주어졌다는 것이고, 그에 따라 현실로부터 스스로를 고립시키기도 쉽다는 것이다. 다른 의견들을 받아들이면서 각자의 의견을 표현하고, 다양한 의견이 공존할 수 있는 사회에 살 수 있다는 것에 감사하는 것은 어떨까. 다양한 의견이 공존할 수 있는 이유는 흑백논리로 나누어지는 것은 사실 없으며 우리는 사실 아무것도 모를다는 것 때문이다. 그러니까 회색처럼 생각하라.
