사물을 주제로 하는 전시에 참여하게 되었습니다.
이번에는 데이터에 근거해, 거시적이고 미시적인 사물의 흐름을, 도시 속의 의, 식, 주 관점에서 물성화한 작업을 선보입니다.
건축가인 루이스 설리반(Louis H. Sullivan)이 형태는 기능을 따른다(Form Follows Function)라고 말했었는데, 그 기능으로 만들어지는 현상을 기록한 것이 데이터라고 한다면 '특정 사물이 만들어내는 데이터를 가지고 메타적인 사물의 형태를 제안'할 수 있지 않을까라는 상상에서 작업이 시작되었습니다. 그리고 이 현상과 측정이 일어나는 곳은 도시이면서, 의, 식, 주의 형태로 우리와 얽혀있다는 점에서, 선재를 활용해 도시와 관련된 데이터와 사물을 직조해 보게 되었습니다.
사용한 데이터는 아래와 같습니다.
- 2021년 대한민국의 31개 항구에서 수입해 오는 32가지 종류의 수입품 데이터
- 2021년 대한민국의 쓰레기, 재활용 데이터
- 2022년 온라인 쇼핑몰 의류 거래액 데이터
- 2022년 외식 프랜차이즈 평수, 매출액 데이터
- 2022년 용도별 건축물 거래현황 (주거, 상업, 공업) 데이터
처음 시도해 보는 아날로그 작업이라 아쉬운 점이 많습니다만, 데이터가 추동하는 매체와 형식을 따라가는 작업이어서 진솔해진 것 같습니다.
이렇게 만들어진 4개의 신작을 이번 전시에서 선보입니다.

I am excited to announce my participation in an exhibition focusing on objects.
This time, grounded in data, I present works that materialize the macroscopic and microscopic flow of objects from the perspectives of clothing, food, and housing within urban settings.
Architect Louis H. Sullivan famously stated, "Form Follows Function." If we consider data as the recorded phenomena resulting from function, this project started from the imagination of proposing 'a meta-object form based on specific object-generated data'. Furthermore, these phenomena and measurements intertwine with our daily urban life in the forms of clothing, food, and housing. Utilizing raw materials, I endeavored to weave objects related to urban data.
The data I used include:
- Import data of 32 types of products from 31 ports in South Korea in 2021.
- South Korea's waste and recycling data in 2021.
- Online shopping mall clothing transaction amounts in 2022.
- Square footage and sales data of dining franchises in 2022.
- Trading status of buildings by purpose (residential, commercial, industrial) in 2022.
Though this is my first attempt at analog work and there might be areas for improvement, the journey of tracing the medium and form driven by data felt sincere.
At this exhibition, I will be showcasing four new creations:
